Left 4 Dead is a cooperative first-person shooting video game developed by Turtle Rock Studios with Valve Corporation as its publisher. Playable in Xbox 360, Windows, and Mac OS X. Released in 2008 it became an instant hit. It received awards from Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences and British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
The game’s storyline is that of your typical Hollywood zombie movie. There are four protagonists: Francis, Bill, Zoey, and Louis who the survivors of an apocalyptic outbreak in Pennsylvania are for they are immune to the virus called Green Flu. The pandemic is like an extreme, highly contagious type of rabies that causes the infected to lose their sanity over a form of psychosis wherein they turn into these crazed cannibalistic zombies. The four struggles to survive as they wander the streets filled with an entire population of what used to be humans but are now bloodthirsty, flesh-eating monsters.
There are a couple of types of zombie bosses who are stronger and deadlier than the common infected ones. The Boomer, a fat bloated zombie that spits a temporarily blinding fluid from inside him on the face of his target that attracts hordes of zombies and when killed explodes and dies with a splatter of the said fluid. The Hunter, a fast paced flexible zombie that runs fast towards its prey and pounces on them, knocking them off balance, and relentlessly gnaws at them. The Smoker, like a toad this zombie uses its tongue which shoots out through the air towards a victim and snatches him/her away dragging the victim back to it. The Tank, a huge muscular zombie that perhaps is the strongest and toughest of them all. The Witch, a seemingly benign female zombie that remains crying in one spot but when disturbed can be shockingly deadly and can eliminate its violator in a matter of seconds.
One of the best features of this game is its attention to detail towards realism. The that it is a cooperative game makes it more believable for that is essentially what would happen in a real life zombie breakout. And the small things like how when a fellow survivor becomes incapacitated he/she can only proceed if assisted by a team mate. The HP of someone who has been severely injured would slowly decrease as he/she carries on with his/her motorskills affected as well. Players may share med kits and tend to team mates’ wounds. This close attention to the smallest detail gives Left 4 Dead a more realistic touch.
With such an intense storyline and realistic visual effects, Left 4 Dead offers a tremendously thrilling gameplay with good replay value. Getting players on the edge of their seats as if watching a suspenseful horror film except better, they are in control of the characters. This game is a must-play for first-person shooter gamers and for anyone who seeks a captivating gaming experience in general. Now go and see if you got what it takes to survive a zombie apocalypse.
